Where are Marangu Waterfalls

The Marangu Waterfalls are actually known locally as Ndoro and Monjo, which mean ‘nature’ and ‘water always’. However, for location purposes, the pin on google maps is Ndoro Waterfall. There is another popular waterfall in Marangu called Kinukamori, but the is another adventure altogether.

Before you reach the pin location when you are driving, you will see the signs on the road that will take you to the tourist office and sign-in center at the caves.

Just 40 kilometers from Moshi, this waterfall is a great day trip for those staying nearby Mount Kilimanjaro.

INTRODUCTION TO ANIMAL LIFE:

Makoa Farm not only offers overnight accommodation for guests, but is also a (wildlife) veterinary practice and the temporary or even permanent home of many animals. We are happy to introduce you to the countless Makoa residents: Healthy, injured and orphaned domestic and wild animals can be found in every conceivable place on the farm.

FOR YOUR STAY, JUST LET YOURSELF BE INSPIRED BY THE POSSIBILITIES OF ACTIVITIES.

We are happy to organize excursions and walks for you, costs vary depending on the activity, additional entrance fees may apply.

HIKING TO …

The waterfall of the Makoa River, the cave there is home to a colony of the “Mountain Fruit Bats”, of which only two colonies are known around Kilimanjaro. You will be amazed at the noise these animals make. If we are lucky we may also catch a sight of a monitor lizard down there.

MASAAI OR CATTLE MARKET:

A traditional Masaai market offers almost everything a Masaai needs to live. Goods and bartered goods are transported from the Masaai steppe to the market on donkey back, often for several days.  A visit to a local cattle market is also very interesting. There is a colorful hustle and bustle and it is amazing that all participants always find their animals in the chaos.

VISIT TO MOSHI TOWN – THE OLD-GERMAN TOWN:

Here you can find everything your souvenir heart desires, experience the flair of the colorful market with all its local traders and local goods. Visit a leather factory where everything is handmade. Drive through the old residential quarter or hike in the Njoro Forest, an 800-hectare forest reserve. Here you can observe marmosets in ancient indigenous trees and see and learn about a bee project. A small entrance fee applies.

VISIT WITH OR WITHOUT HIKING TO THE HOT SPRINGS:

After breakfast, depart by four-wheel drive to the hot springs (‘Hot Springs’) south of Makoa Farm in the Masaai Steppe. Discover the surroundings on a guided walk through a biotope between various springs and rivers. Along the way we observe exotic birds, monkeys and, with a bit of luck, the shy crocodiles. It is also the habitat of various – but very shy – gazelles, striped mongooses and nocturnal inhabitants such as porcupines, aardvarks, striped hyenas.

After picnicking under huge, ancient fig trees, there is plenty of time to relax and bathe in the warm spring.

Our Day Trips

Makoa Animal Farm Tour

Makoa Animal Farm Tour

Makoa-Farm, our base, is located in Northern Tanzania, South of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.

The farm is near Kilimanjaro’s Machame Gate with access to the spectacular rainforest on the mountain’s lower slopes. The area is home to the Chagga, people whose small villages and coffee farms dot the hillsides. On the plains to the south, Masai graze their cattle. The area is rich in diversity.

The farmland is surrounded by the Makoa and Kikafu river valleys with their beautiful gallery forest, picturesque villages and local markets can be visited in the surrounding area – usually accompanied by the fantastic view of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The farm and its surroundings are also ideal for short hikes, bird watching, animal and nature exploring e.g. along the river valleys. We are also happy to plan and organize longer hikes and day excursions by car for you.
Whilst staying at our camp you will enjoy comfortable accommodation and excellent meals, always freshly prepared food.

Makoa-Farm is also home to the first wildlife sanctuary in Tanzania. Various kinds of animals, wild and domestic, live here temporarily or as permanent residents.

We are committed to environmental, nature and animal protection and work closely with the Tanzanian authorities on wildlife rescue missions.

Because the previous veterinary practice has long since become far too small, a large (wildlife) veterinary clinic is currently under construction on the farm property.
Located on the southern slope of Mount Kilimanjaro, Makoa Farm is the only wildlife rescue center in Tanzania. The organization is taking care of the injured and orphaned animals that would otherwise have no chance of survival in the wild. The mission of the rehabilitation center is to provide treatment to the animals that came in the way of harm and release them back into their natural habitat if possible.

On Makoa Farm you will see a variety of wild animals such as a cheetah, monkeys, zebras, elephants, marabous and many others, and each animal has their own story.

Makoa Farm is a self-funded institution, strongly dependent on the sold entry tickets and donations. Your visit there will make a contribution to the survival of its residents

    Marangu Waterfalls - Ndoro waterfall

After several kilometers of easy walking, we reached the office at Ndoro Waterfall and started the steep descent to the bottom of the falls. This is really the only challenging part of the climb and they even provide you with a natural, wooden pole to help you get up and down the hill. The trail was breathtaking as we entered the valley and the lush greenery at the base of the falls, we were quite literally blown away. After a few days of heavy rain, the waterfall was plummeting down with extreme force causing spray to shoot back a few hundred meters from the impact point. On calmer days in the dry season, you can venture right up to the falls, but we admired this massive waterfall from a slight distance

Monjo is much smaller but a very stunning spot with a swimming hole completely surrounded by ferns and vines. It’s one of the prettiest waterfalls I’ve seen in Tanzania. During the dry season or times with lower volumes of rainfall, this is a popular swimming spot and cliff-jump site.

        Marangu Waterfalls Chasing

After the cultural tour and exploration of the caves, it was time to go waterfall chasing. The hike is a 5.5-kilometer loop if you visit both waterfalls and probably just a four-kilometer out and back trail if you just visit Ndoro. The journey along the way passes through the forest neighborhood so you can observe the local dwellings and chat with some locals. There’s an abundance of fruit throughout the route with bananas, guava, and avocados in plentiful supply.

Make sure to keep your eye out for chameleons on this trail. It’s a bit of a hotspot for these color-changing reptiles and we were lucky enough to spot two of them who were grasping to some small plants beside the trail. Because the sun was not out, they were dark brown and very well camouflaged in the shrubs.

This underground facility was built as a hideout for when the Maasai tribes would come to fight or loot the Chagga people. They built a cave big enough for 700 people to hide in and there are more than four kilometers of tunnels. In the tour, you will see how they added ventilation to the cave, stored animals, and how they used a code system to enter the cave. If you didn’t know the code you would be hit with the ‘skull crusher’. We also looked inside a typical Wachagga hut. This is where the family would live and also keep their livestock at night.

Materuni Waterfall is actually known as Nambe Waterfall locally, which means ‘first-born’. It has this name as it is the first waterfall that comes from the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. However, for location purposes, this waterfall is known as Materuni, which is the name of the village it is in. Materuni Village is named after the Materu tribe that is the majority in the village. Materuni Waterfalls and Coffee Tour

Your guide/driver will pick you up in Moshi around 9 am and drive for 40 minutes to Materuni village.

First on the planning is a visit to the waterfalls. You’ll walk for about 40 minutes over narrow paths through lush vegetation. On a clear day you might see Kilimanjaro, but even if you don’t we’re sure you won’t be disappointed. The scenery is stunning and your guide will give you a first introduction to Chagga culture and habits. There’ll be time to rest at the waterfall, or even a swim if you’re brave enough to face the cold water.

Later on you’ll walk back to the village over a partly different path, which again will take around 40 minutes. You’ll continue your day with a coffee experience. Your guide will explain more about how the coffee beans are grown, dried, roasted etc. But that’s not all! You won’t just get the explanation, but also the opportunity to execute every step by yourself, while the locals are singing and dancing all around.

After all this hard work you deserve a nice lunch, and the local ‘mama’s’ will be more than happy to prepare some of their favorite Chagga dishes for you. Banana stew, pilau or rice and beans are only a few of the options.

Once you’ve finished your meal and coffee it’s time to leave and your guide/driver will take you back to Moshi.

              Duration: +- 5 hours

              Driving time: 1.3 hours, return

How difficult is the  materuni hike?

We’d categorize this hike as a rather easy one. Big parts of it are (almost) flat, and the sections that go uphill are short enough to give you time to breathe in between. A few of them are a bit steep, but this hike can be completed by anyone with a normal physical condition. If for any reason you think you’re unable to complete it, we can arrange for a motorbike or even a car to bring you to about 10-15 minutes from the waterfall.

During or shortly after the rain season the paths can get muddy and slippery. We always recommend to wear decent walking shoes, but especially during this time.
